Come on Down!
59 Squadron will be throwing open its doors on Friday 24 April for an evening of displays, presentations and promotions.
Parents of current cadets as well as prospective cadets and staff will be able to see the wide range of activities and opportunities on offer, as well as talking to cadets and staff about their experiences.
As one of the largest youth voluntary organisations in the UK, the Air Training Corps can offer young adults aged 13 to 18 a range of opportunities to learn new skills, in areas such as flying, gliding and communications, which they might not gain elsewhere. Although many cadets do go on to join the RAF, Army or Royal Navy, the Squadron is not a recruiting office – the leadership and other skills learned can be used in civilian as well as uniformed life.
The ATC is also the largest supporter of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, and 59 Squadron also takes part in canoeing, kayaking, climbing and camping trips and expeditions overseas, such as to Norway, Germany and the USA. It also offers sports such as swimming, football, rugby, cross-country and athletics in competition with other squadrons in West and South Yorkshire.
Cadets and staff from the Squadron work with local and national organisations, such as the Honley and Penistone shows, and with Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life events.
The open evening starts from 7pm this Friday at the TA Centre on St Paul’s Street, Huddersfield.
