Region sports stars

Katrina Couchman and Michael Hargreaves recently represented North Region in the Air Training Corps’s UK-wide sports competitions.
Kat, one of the Squadron’s Cadet Warrant Officers, was representing the Region for the sixth time, this time at hockey while Michael, a Sergeant, was making his debut as a footballer.
“Every year, squadrons are invited to send cadets to trials with Wing in hockey, football, netball and rugby,” explained Kat, 18, from Brighouse. “There are inter-Wing competitions, and the lucky few are then selected to play in the inter-Region competition.
“I’ve represented the Region at hockey, netball and athletics, and 59 Squadron has a good sporting tradition at national level.”
“This was my first Region sports ‘blue’,” said Michael, 17, from Fartown. “With the inter-Wing competition it’s all done the same day, but this time we travelled down to RAF Cosford the day before. The opening games started after breakfast at 9.30am and went through until lunch, competing against the other five regions in the Corps.”
“Sadly, neither of us made through to the finals; North Region came third in the hockey and fifth in football, but it was great first experience for me.”
