59 Squadron, Huddersfield

Initial Training Flight

While in ITF, you will learn the basics of radio communications, the Air Training Corps (ATC), the history of the RAF, rifles, organisation and rank in the RAF and other useful information.

You will probably feel a bit nervous when you first join but, by being with other new Cadets, you will gain confidence and make friends within the Squadron.

You will normally be in ITF for around three months, and during this time you will be in lessons most parade nights, but there also fun activities include in your training programme. This won’t be too boring, as you will be learning about different things and you still do drill and parades with the rest of the Squadron. You can also take part in social and adventure training activities.

ITF classes are usually taken by CI Buchanan, working with upto fifteen Cadets. You are taught the most important facts about the subject and there is a short multiple-choice test; you need to get 50% in order to pass. There is also practical training on the No. 8 rifle (.22) with one of the squadron’s qualified weapons instructors, and a chance to go shooting on the Squadron range, and the opportunity to go flying with other Cadets.

Once you have finished your exams, you will progress to being a First Class Cadets and join in activities with other Cadets.
